Splat! contacted us with a hard drive chock full of legal audio samples. Who knew, but the radio station samples like “YOU HEARD IT FIRST” all come from a handful of radio imaging artists. Splat! is a compendium of these files and we built an indexing engine to automatically categorize and make searchable all of these files.

For future updates Splat’s team just drags and drops files and the system does the rest.

This system is the culmination of about 4 months of research and efforts. In addition to indexing and categorizing, the system creates down-sample previews of each audio file. It also supports a shopping cart like system so a visitor can choose all the files they want and then download in one batch.

Splat! Online was a custom app developed in PHP / MySQL. One of the biggest constraints for this client was ongoing hosting costs. Through a tremendous amount of optimization we were able to get the entire system, both indexing engine, and web site running on Dreamhost’s servers (Dreamhost is our recommended budget hosts for those who can’t afford Rackspace).
